What’s Happening in East Central Missouri July 27 – Aug. 9, 2026

While the hot weather is likely to stick around a while, summer activities are starting to wind down over the next two weeks, with the final community fairs happening this week and next. If you can’t get enough of the midway rides, tractor pulls, entertainment, and fair food, then head to Owensville this week for the Gasconade County Fair and WashMo next week for the Washington Town and Country Fair.

Other events happening include several free family-friendly and Back to School events like the Sullivan Fire Station Open House that will include bounce houses and a chance to get a close up view of fire trucks, as well as the Kids Day event at St. Clair VFW, and the Back to School and Free BBQ event held by Blessings Are Miracles at the Sullivan VFW.

And, in communities near Franklin County, you’ll find more fun things to do, like an American themed pub crawl and Balloon Glowdeo, both happening in Eureka. Bourbon enthusiasts will want to head to Hermann for the 4th Annual Missouri Bourbon Festival featuring over two dozen distilleries, as well as food trucks, and more. Also in Hermann, the Chief Mason Griffith Foundation is hosting a single-day fundraiser that will include local businesses and vendors, with funds raised going toward creating a First Responder tribute mural in Hermann.

The USDA Summer Food Service is partnering with the Washington Public Library to help area families to provide food service beginning Monday, June 29 and continuing on every Mondays until public school starts. The food service includes 7 days of breakfast and lunch, with fresh fruit, vegetable, and dairy. This service is for families with children ages 1-18. Pickup is at the Washington Public Library on Mondays between 4-6 p.m.

Scenic Regional Library and Foundations for Strengthening Families are partnering to help area families with summer food service beginning Monday, June 29 through Monday, August 17. The service will provide one week’s worth of breakfast and lunch items for kids, available while supplies last. The St. Clair Branch of Scenic Regional Library is hosting a Children’s Theatre Dino Academy event at 1 p.m. Featuring life-like, colorful dinosaur puppets that stomp, roar and charm their way into every heart, this show blends science, storytelling and imagination in the style of your favorite nature programs.

Award-winning naturalist Mark H.X. Glenshaw aka “The Owl Man” will give a talk at the Washington Public Library on how to find an owl in your neighborhood. Mark has studied Great Horned Owls in Forest Park since 2005, and at this presentation Mark will tell you which owls you are most likely to see or hear in your neighborhood, where and how to look for them, and what to listen for.

Wednesday, Aug. 5 – Sunday, Aug. 9
Perhaps it’s fitting that Franklin County’s largest fair closes out the season. The fair happens at the Washington Fairgrounds and features several days of fair fun including rides, a classic car show, livestock and 4-H exhibits, vendors, food and drinks, and musical performances from national acts.

Head to Scenic Regional Library St. Clair Branch for an evening of Mixtape Music Bingo. Test your knowledge of classic party tunes at this fun, free event that begins at 6 p.m.

KG “Ksmilesfoodpeople Gibson” Sharing Positive Messages and Small Town Food Reviews

If you live in Franklin County and follow some of your favorite local restaurants on social media, odds are you’ve probably seen a food review video about it posted by a local page called Ksmilesfoodpeople Gibson. The man behind the account is Kordel Gibson, but most people call him KG, or “the food review guy.”

He’s built a following by sharing videos of the various dishes he tries at area restaurants, as well as by showcasing the dining options that are locally owned in small town Missouri. His content features restaurants in Pacific, Belle, Rosebud, St. Clair, Washington, Union, Hermann, Sullivan, and beyond. In fact, KG isn’t just the food review guy, he’s the small town food review guy, a distinction that sets him apart from other Missouri-based food influencers, and a feature that he has no intention of changing.

“People tell me that I could get a lot more followers if I would go to St. Louis and try the restaurants there, but I don’t want to do that,” he shares.

And while some social media based foodies tend to focus their content on trying the most “extreme” eating challenges or the biggest, most calorie-dense options available at restaurants, KG sticks to the menu items that the average person is likely to order.

Over the years, he has made videos about trying baked goods from cottage bakeries, breakfast foods, ice cream, coffee shops, barbecue, burgers, and just about everything in between. And because there’s no certain kind of food or establishment that he wants to review over others, it allows him to also put his focus on the people who own the restaurants he visits. 

Although there’s lots of food reviewers and influencers throughout Missouri, and some of those influencers with a massive following have made visits at local restaurants, they don’t seem to have quite the same impact as the review videos that come from KG. Maybe that’s because he has a different method, or to put it in foodie terms, a secret sauce that isn’t easy to replicate.

His charismatic, narrative style pulls viewers in and the tantalizing shots of food, and his natural, conversational interview approach sets people at ease and helps them open up. The end result gives viewers a unique, behind the curtain experience that you don’t often find in other food review videos. A true people person, KG shares that the real stars of his videos are the folks behind the business.

“I don’t like just going to places and eating the food. I like sitting down with the owners and talking to them. That’s my favorite part,” KG explains.

Drawing inspiration from a Food Network legend

Inspired by Guy Fieri, the TV personality that shows both the food and the back of the house experience on “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” KG started filming restaurant reviews two years ago. While his followers can’t get enough of his candid takes on the local food scene, take a quick scan of any of his social media profiles and you’ll notice that his content is about more than restaurants. 

KG’s social media posts consist of positive messages, slices of his personal life, including his fitness routine and the time he spends with his two daughters. On more than one occasion he’s shared photo evidence of his “girl dad” moments, like when his daughters have acted as stylists or makeup artists and dressed him up with clothes, accessories, makeup, or painted toenails.

While on the surface these content areas might seem unrelated, they represent what’s truly important to KG and lend an authenticity that keeps his audience engaged and feeling like he’s an internet friend they just haven’t met in real life yet.

The USDA Summer Food Service is partnering with the Washington Public Library to help area families to provide food service beginning Monday, June 29 and continuing on every Mondays until public school starts. The food service includes 7 days of breakfast and lunch, with fresh fruit, vegetable, and dairy. This service is for families with children ages 1-18. Pickup is at the Washington Public Library on Mondays between 4-6 p.m.

Scenic Regional Library and Foundations for Strengthening Families are partnering to help area families with summer food service beginning Monday, June 29 through Monday, August 17. The service will provide one week’s worth of breakfast and lunch items for kids, available while supplies last. The Scenic Regional Library Union Branch will host 250 Years of American Trivia at 6 p.m. Teams of four will test their knowledge of people, events, pop culture, and milestones that shaped the nation.

The City of Union will have its fireworks display at Veterans Memorial Park at approximately 9:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs, coolers, blankets and yard games to make an evening of it at the park. There will be concessions available for purchase as well as a beer garden. Sky Candle Band  will be performing at 6:30 p.m. and there will be a free face painter for the children along with balloon sculpting and barrel rides.
